Naturally occurring data in the study of virtual teams in working life – Challenges and opportunities
2014
Previous research on virtual teamwork heavily relies on experiments conducted in laboratory settings, frequently utilizing zero-history university student groups, and drawing conclusions with regard to working life. While such studies can give some preliminary insights into the characteristics of distributed teamwork, they lack a methodological ingredient which is too often neglected in research on human interaction: authenticity. Such findings, consequently, are not easily applicable to what people do in real work life contexts. Earlier pleas to focus more on what is going on outside the laboratory, however, have been widely disregarded. This article takes a stand for including more natura…
Reducing Relationship Conflict in Virtual Teams With Diversity Faultlines: The Effect of an Online Affect Management Intervention on the Rate of Grow…
2020
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of an online affect management intervention on relationship conflict through the rate of growth of team resilience in virtual teams with diversity faultlines. Fifty-two 4-person teams participated in a randomized controlled trial design with repeated measures (i.e., three measurement occasions). Teams were randomly assigned to either an intervention designed to help them manage emotions in virtual teams or a control condition. Our findings showed that affect management can reduce the level of relationship conflict in virtual teams with diversity faultlines and that this effect can be explained by the pattern of change in team resilience in re…
Presence and Absence in Global Virtual Team Meetings : Physical, Virtual, and Social Dimensions
2016
Global virtual work is commonly organised around virtual meetings. As virtual team members often belong to multiple groups in their work, finding time for global team meetings may be challenging due to competing priorities and roles as well as different time zones and schedules. Furthermore, social presence does not automatically emerge based on physical or virtual presence. Therefore, the notions of being physically, virtually and socially present or absent in global team meetings are important, and affect the collaboration of global work groups. These different dimensions of presence and absence and their nature as fluctuating phenomena have not yet been scrutinised in virtual work litera…
Key challenges of new and small virtual team
2007
The purpose of this thesis is to study the factors must be noticed when building a new and small virtual team. These virtual teams are groups of people who work together without the boundaries of time or space using technology (Lipnack & Stamps 2000, 18). The main goal is to study in detail some of the common challenges faced when working with the small virtual teams, especially in the early stages of team development. With this study and the results of it, the reader is aware of the challenges of virtual teams and the differences and similarities between traditional and virtual teams. In addition the reader knows also some factors that must be noticed when a new small virtual team is suppo…
Leadership in an online multiplayer strategy game: case – Illuria
2011
This paper looks at leadership communication in the context of online multiplayer games and the groups that operate within them. In multiplayer games promoting teamwork and long-term cooperation, issues of management and leadership are prevalent. The study explores the experiences that members of multiplayer communities have towards leadership in multiplayer games by looking at one specific case of organised team play within the framework of a turn-based online strategy game. The data utilised in this study consist of themed player interviews conducted via e-mail. The analysis proposes three central dimensions that emerged from the data. These were labelled: (1) the leader as primus motor, …
MANAGING THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES
2010
Even if since ancient times wealth and power have been associated with having physical resources, and the traditional production factors were predominantly physical, knowledge revolution is the shift from physical-based economy to predominantly knowledge-based economy. Experts have lately noticed the increase of economic importance of technologies, information, economic processes, human capital, the organisation’s abilities and skills, each of these factors having a significant importance to the knowledge management. It is expected that future wealth and power shall mainly be derived from intangible intellectual resources, from the knowledge capital. This is why we considered it of absolute…
Process and technology challenges in swift-starting virtual teams
2007
Originally published in the journal Information & Management : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/03787206 Virtual teams often face tight schedules and a need to start quickly and perform instantly. The goal of our study was to enhance understanding of the challenges faced by such teams. We used time–interaction–performance theory as the framework for following the processes and functions within virtual teams working on a systems development task. Our study provided a detailed examination of the group process, applied to virtual teams working under time pressure. The challenges faced by virtual teams in such settings showed that teams must work to enhance their effectiveness in mu…
Cross-border virtual teams, as seen from applied psychology & applied economy perspective. A Case study of a cross-cultural teaching program
2018
W bieżącym artykule omawiamy zalety programu zajęć, zaprojektowanego do wzmacniania umiejętności komunikacji w wirtualnych zesp…
“I felt a bit nervous” : Virtual Exchange as an emotional journey
2021
Virtual Exchange is a collective term for a set of collaborative online learning practices that cut across institutional, cultural, and international borders. Moving outside their learning environments, the participants engage in project work with foreign peers. The teams have to work across time zones, use foreign languages, manage cultural differences and apply digital tools for communication and collaboration. The virtual projects enhance the development of transversal work/life skills, which are an asset in today’s global labour market. The aim of the present study is to explore the emotional trajectory of Virtual Exchange based on the students’ e-portfolios. By analysing the self-evalu…
Occupational emerging risks affecting international virtual project Team Results
2017
The expansion of internet access, high-speed connection services, collaborative work platforms and tools, allowed employees to interact virtually offering companies the possibility to develop projects around the world, reducing operational costs and gain competitive advantage. Realizing the advantages and disadvantages of developing a project team in an international virtual work environment, requires adopting specific strategies to construct an effective team and ensure the project success. One of the most important disadvantages that we identified is that the new work environment brings new risks for both team members and managers. So, it becomes mandatory to identify and analyze the occu…
